POLITICAL CAMPAIGN SERIES

The WHEATON COLLECTIBLES CAMPAIGN Series of Decanters is a revival of a custom dating back to President Zachary Taylor in 1848. The First Wheaton commemoratives were issued immediately after the 1968 conventions. The Republican Elephant has Nixon on one side and Agnew on the other. The Democratic Donkey with Humphrey on one side and Muskie on the other. The second set of Wheaton decanters were issued for the 1972 convention. The Republican Elephant again had Nixon and Agnew but was in Amethyst. Three versions of the Democratic Donkey were issued for 1972, the first one had McGovern and Eagleton, after Eagleton was dumped from the ticket the second version was issued with McGovern and Schriver.
During the production of 2 Donkey versions some Decanters were made with the profile of the candidates facing to the rear, all of the others faced toward the front. There doesn’t seem to be as many reversed decanters in circulation. The Wheaton Glass Co. stopped making Commemorative glass decanters before the next conventions in 1976 and had assigned production rights over to Millville Art Glass to continue the series. M.A.G. changed over to a Cabin style bottle for their Campaign Series and only issued bottles for 1976 and 1980.
